Peuerl, Paul: 10 Dances (1625)

for 2/3 instruments and continuo or 3 instruments.

These dances come from Peuerl´s Gantz neue Padouanen Intraden, Galliarden, Couranten und Dantz mit dreyen Stinmmen gesetzt of 1625, a most unusual collection, designed to be performed in a variety of ways. It was printed as two volumes, one with cantus and bassus, the other with tenor and bassus, labelled respectively “erster Theil” and “ander Theil”. In the introduction Peuerl explains that the tenor part of those pieces in the “ander Theil” marked “NB” can be played an octave higher (this applies to all the numbers printed here); he does not make it exactly clear what instrument is to play the part at this pitch, but he may very well have had an organ in mind. In addition Peuerl states that the pieces can be done with just cantus and bassus and a keyboard instrument; he suggests that the tenor part can be incorporated into the keyboard part. He mentions combinations of lute(s) and organ, as well as the more obvious “Discantgeiger” (violinist) and “Bassgeiger” (cellist).
The last of his instructions is interesting, as it suggests changing the scoring on the repeats, especially if the instruments are physically separated. He also suggests varying the dynamics and, more unusually, the tempo, on the repeats.
Unfortunately the only known copy of Peuerl´ s interesting collection was lost in the 1935-1945 war; this edition is based on the 1929 transcription by Karl Geiringer in Denkmäler der Tonkunst in Österreich, lxx. 1 have halved the note values in the courantes, but retained the original note values in the triple sections in the remaining pieces. In realising the continuo I have tried to allow for the fact that the second part can be played at either octave, but this proved a somewhat difficult task, and performers should feel free to adapt the realisation according to the instrumentation used.
