Dufay, Guillaume: 2 Rondeaux

for 4 voices or instruments.

These two songs of Dufay are probably both early works, possibly written before the composer moved to Italy in 1428, or during the years he spent at Rome and Ferrara before his return to Cambrai in 1440; it is thought that the source for both these pieces was originally copied in Italy. Both pieces are somewhat similar in texture, with two mellifluous “vocal” lines - in canon in Par droit je puis -, and two supporting contratenor parts (current thinking is that these parts too may have been sung). In Par droit je puis the first contratenor part can be regarded as being optional; however the second piece will sound very thin without both contratenor parts.
Both pieces are printed after Oxford, Bodleian Library, Cod. Canonici misc. 213. Hé, compaignons has been transposed up a fifth. The original note values have been halved in no. 1, but quartered in no. 2. Editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to one note only.
