Selma y Salaverde, Bartolomo de: Correnti

& Balletto for 2 high instruments and continuo.

Bartolomeo Selma y Salaverde was a Spanish fagottista (player of the dulcian or early bassoon), who worked as a performer on that instrument for the Archduke Leopold at Munch from 1628-30. He was evidently a considerable virtuoso, to judge from much of the music in his only surviving collection, the Canzoni Fantasie et Correnti Da suonar ad una 2.3.4. Con Basso Continuo, published by Bartolomeo Magni of Venice in 1638. This print contains music of many different kinds: there are free fantasies for solo instrument and continuo, elaborate divisions on well-known sixteenth-century pieces such as Palestrina´s Vestiva i colli and Lassus´ Susanne un jour, and some dance pieces for various combinations. The present pieces were probably intended primarily for violins or cornetts, with cello or dulcian on the bass part. However, the style of writing is quite "neutral", and the pieces can easily be played on recorders.
