Rossi, Salamone: 3 Sinfonie

for 2 instruments and continuo.

These three sinfonie are taken from Salamone Rossi´s Quarto Libro, originally printed in 1622, though my transcription follows the reprint of 1642. In Rossi´s Quarto Libro the distinction between a sinfonia and a sonata is getting a little blurred: although the Sinfonia Quarta and Quinta are still short, introductory pieces, the Sinfonia Seconda has three contrasting sections in different metres, and is very similar to some of the abstract sonatas (as opposed to those based on popular tunes) in the same collection. More music from Rossi's fourth book - as well as some from the third - will shortly be appearing in our Chamber Music of the Seventeenth Century series. The original note values have been preserved. In bar 16 of the Sinfonia Seconda the original time-signature is a 3. The use of two different duple time-signatures (see bar 23) in this piece would appear to be deliberate. An occasional editorial accidental has been added above the stave. Although composed with violins mainly in mind, these pieces can be played quite satisfactorily on cornetts, recorders, or other wind instruments.
