Rossi, Salamone: 2 Sonatas

for 2 high instruments and continuo.

These two short but my no means insubstantial sonatas come respectively from Salamone Rossi´s Terzo Libro, (reprinted in 1623, though clearly originally issued before that date), and his Quarto Libro (originally published in 1622, though only the reprint of 1642 survives). The Sonata Prima detta la Moderna earns its name through the expressive opening, and the marked contrast between the three sections. Other sonatas by Rossi from the Terzo and Quarto Libro, which contain his most interesting music, can be found in our series Chamber Music of the Seventeenth Century. The original note values have been preserved throughout. For the sake of convenience the original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar until contradicted; the occasional purely editorial accidental will be found printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only. The title pages of Rossi´s two books call in the first place for violins, with chitarrone for the continuo, but there is nothing particularly violinistic about Rossi´s writing in these pieces, and they can also be played on wind instruments such as cornetti or recorders.
