Buonamente, Giovanni Battista: Sinfonie

& Gagliarda for 2 instruments and continuo.

These pieces are taken from IL QUARTO LIBRO DE VARIE SONATE Sinfonie, Gagliarde, Corrente, e Brandi Per sonar con Due Violini, e un Basso di Viola, published in Venice in 1626, a varied collection contain some long sonatas, some of which are based on ground basses and/or popular tunes. The ten sinfonie are mostly solemn in nature, perhaps intended to be played with the contrasting dance movements. In this edition the original note values have been retained throughout; in the Sinfonia Sesta the time-signature in bar 14 is a simple 3. The continuo part can be played on organ, harpsichord, or (probably better) on a fretted instrument such as lute or theorbo: care should be taken to avoid swamping the melody parts, which can be played on violins, cometti or recorders.
