White, William: 2 In nomines

for 4 instruments.

Robert White was born in London in 1538 and died there of the plague in 1574. He studied music at Cambridge, and in 1562 became the Master of the Choristers at Ely Cathedral; seven years later he graduated to the equivalent position at Westminster Abbey. As one might expect from this, he was basically a composer of church music. These instrumental settings of the Gloria tibi Trinitas plainsong, which was the basis for the many In nomines settings during the second half of the sixteenth century, are probably early works. Both pieces are printed here after Bodleian Library, MS d. 212-6, though no. I appears also in keyboard score in the Mulliner Book.
In the present edition the original note values have been halved. Editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only. Original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar. The Bodleian source, which was compiled some decades after White's death, appears to have a number of notes incorrectly marked sharp, resulting in clashes that do not seem to be within the bounds of normal English false relations.
These pieces are ideally suited to consorts of viols or recorders. If recorders are used, the performing style should be as vocal as possible.
