Ward, John: 2 Fantasias

for 4 instruments.

These two short fantasies by John Ward (1571-1638) are taken from a manuscript of around 1640, written in score form and today preserved in the library of the Paris Conservatoire (Rés. F. 770). John Ward was one of the most inventive English composers of madrigals and consort pieces working in the early seventeenth century, and these works, though modest in length, are actually quite intense, and full of invention and contrast. The second piece, in common with other Ward pieces in the Paris MS, though predominantly in the minor mode, begins in the major, and modulates rather often.
In this edition, the second piece has been transposed down a tone, to bring it into a more comfortable key for most purposes. Original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar, for the sake of convenience. Purely editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only.
