Schultz, Johannes: Pavans and Instradas

for 4 instruments.

These pieces come from Johann Schultz´s neuwe ausserlesene schöne liebliche Paduanen, Intraden und Galliard a 4, published in Hamburg in 1617; a complete edition of the collection will appear in our German Instrumental Music series. Johann Schultz (1582-1653) spent his working life in northern Germany; from 1605 until his death he was court organist at the Braunschweig-Lüneburg court at Dannenberg. In addition to the 1617 print he published another collection also containing instrumental music, the Musicalische Lustgarte (Lüneburg, 1622), as well as a book of motets in from three to sixteen parts (1621). He was a relatively conservative composer, but, to judge by some of the pieces here, sometimes rather inventive. These pieces are very different from. those of those of, say, William Brade, who also had a collection of dances printed in north Germany in 1617; they show the traits of an organist, with their use of sequence and other ways of developing simple ideas. His intradas, like those of Melchior Franck (see LPM TM40 and TM54) are quite varied in style and approach.
In this edition the original note values have generally been retained, apart from the short final triple section of Intrada VIII, in which the original (black) notes have been halved (time-signature: 3). A few editorial accidentals are printed above the stave, applying to the one note only.
