Posch, Isaac: Intradas and Courantes

for 4 instruments.

These intradas and courantes, in common with the five-part paduana and gagliarda already published in this series (EML 201) come from Posch´s Musicalische Tafelfreudt, das ist allerley neuer Paduanen und Gagliarden a 5, desgleichen Intraden und Couranten, published inNürnberg in 1621.
The intradas in the collection are well-constructed miniatures, which develop short motives in a variety of quite satisfying ways. Some of them are quite elaborate, with divisions in the top part that can really only be played on the violin: for. this selection we have chosen pieces written in a more “neutral” instrumental style.
The musical relationship between the intrada and the couranta varies from piece to piece. In no. V the opening of each section of the couranta is based on that of the first two sections of the intrada, and the same is true of no. Xl; in the other two pieces there is definitely a relationship, but it is less obvious. Intrada V is unusual in that the same opening idea is used in all three sections, but starting on different notes of the scale: this feature, combined with the use of similar figuration in the first and third sections, holds the piece together in an attractive way. Intrada IV also has an attractively coherent structure: it is largely based on a combination of a slow descending theme in minims and a faster one with syncopations. This kind of strongly focused structure is common in the best German intradas of the time, particular those of Widmann and Franck.
In this edition the original note values have been retained in the duple-time pieces but halved in the courantes. Editorial accidentals are shown in the usual way. Where the bass part goes below F, alternatives are supplied in small notes.
