These pieces are taken from Pietro Lappi´s Canzoni da suonare di Pietro Lappi, Maestro della Musica di S. Maria delle Gratie di Brescia, A4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12 & 13, Libro Primo, published in Venice by Gardane in 1616. This collection is unusual in including pieces for every possible number of instruments between four and thirteen, also for the use in some pieces of very widely spaced ensembles. Stylistically the pieces are mostly rather conservative, avoiding complex harmonies. While the larger-scale pieces are often quite slow-moving and solemn, the two pieces printed here make use of lively figuration in all parts.
The original note values have been retained throughout. An occasional editorial accidental appears printed above the stave, applying to the one note only.
