German composer Johann Kaspar Kerll had an illustrious career as a court organist and composer. Kerll knew Athanasius Kircher, and was inspired to write the Ricercar in Cylindrum phonotacticum transferenda (included in this edition) which was based on the mechanism of the musical automaton. Also in this book are two keyboard canzonas which have been arranged for four viols.
