Farmer, John: 2 Madrigals (1599)

for 4 voices or instruments.

These two madrigals are taken from John Farmer´s First Set of English Madrigals to Foure Voices, published in London in 1599.
Remarkably little is known about John Farmer, except that in 1595 he was appointed Organist and Master of the Children at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin, and that four years later he was back in London. As well as his book of madrigals (the only one to survive), he published a book of canons in 1591. His madrigals stand stylistically somewhere between the light-hearted pieces of Morley, and the more serious and intense work of Wilbye or Weelkes. You´ll never leave still tossing begins rather in the vein of a canzonetta, with its repeated notes, and frequent dotted rhythms, but then introduces a highly expressive passage with double suspensions.
These pieces are printed after the copy surviving in the Royal College of Music, London. The original note values have been retained throughout. The occasional editorial appears above the stave in the usual way, applying to the one note only.
