Engelmann: Chromatic Paduan and Galliard

for 4 instruments.

This remarkable paduan and galliard pair, with its unusual chromaticisms, comes from Engelmann´s Fasciculus concentuum cujusmodi paduanas et galliardas ... secundus of 1617. Another pair from the same collection, based on the popular dance tune known variously as “La Bourrée” and “Parson´s Farewell”, has already appeared in our series (EML 189): like most of Engelmann´s pieces, it is in five parts.
Georg Engelmann was born around 1575; he seems to have spent his working life in Leipzig, and died in that city in 1632. He published three books of pavans and galliards, which will be published complete in our “German Instrumental Music” series.
In this edition the original note values have been preserved throughout. The occasional editorial accidental has been added, applying to the one note only.
Given the rather low written pitch of these pieces, we have available an alternative version transposed up a fourth (order number EML319a).
