Encina, Juan del: 5 Villancicos

for 4 voices or instruments.

Juan del Encina (1468-1530) was probably the most gifted Spanish composer of his generation. As well as a musician he was a poet and dramatist. In the Cancionero de Palacio, from which the present pieces were taken, Encina is the most generously represented composer.
The first two songs here are actually romances - normally serious songs in a straightforward strophic form rather than villancicos; Una sañosa porfia is a song in which Boabdil, a Morrish general, laments on his army's defeat at the hands of the Spaniards.
In the villancicos the first A section is a refrain, and each new verse begins with the two B sections and ends with A.
The original note values have been quartered, except for no. 5, in which they have been halved. Editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only. I am grateful to Jack Sage for translating and editing the texts.
These songs can be sung a cappella, or played on instruments. The two romances work especially well as accompanied songs, that is with just the top voice sung, and the remaining parts played on instruments.
