Da pacem (5 settings c. 1500)

for 4 voices or instruments.

The Da pacem antiphon was used for several polyphonic settings around 1500 (and later in the century - see Trombetti´s setting in LPM 534), including ones by Heinrich Isaac, (a 4) Ludwig Senfl (a 4), Adrian Willaert (a 4), Claudin de Sermisy (a 3), Johannes Prioris (a 6), Alexander Agricola (a 3 - see EML 311). The simplicity of the melody, in particular its predominantly stepwise movement, makes it especially suitable for imitation or even canon at the 4th or 5th, and some of the settings printed here exploit this, in particular the double canon by Antoine Brumel.
In this edition the original note values have been halved throughout. A few editorial accidentals have been added, printed small above the stave: these apply, to the one note only. For the sake of simplicity, the original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar. Text underlay in italics is editorial.
