Coprario, John: The 2-, 3- & 4-Part Consort Music

edited by Richard Charteris (2nd edition).

A publication of major importance for all viol players and students of English consort music repertoire. Richard Charteris is the leading authority on the music of John Coprario (c. 1575-1626), and this edition brings the virtual fulfilment of his long-standing ambition to publish all this composer's prolific output of instrumental music. Coprario was the favourite composer of Charles I and led a group of instrumentalists founded by the king for performances of works by Coprario, Gibbons and others, in which Charles himself participated. A number of the pieces in the present edition would been played, as well as many of his fantasia-suites - a genre which Coprario created, cementing his reputation as one of the most important figures in the history of early English instrumental music. In his footsteps were to follow his pupil William Lawes, John Jenkins, Christopher Gibbons, Matthew Locke and indeed Henry Purcell. The works in this edition display his characteristic charm and skill, and range from the contemplative to the extrovert, providing music that can be enjoyed by players at all levels of proficiency.
