Cima, Giovanni Paolo: 2 Canzoni da sonar

Giovanni Paolo Cima, who was born around 1570, seems to have spent his working life in Milan, where he had an enviable reputation as an organist. The present canzoni da sonar come from his Partito de Ricercari & Canzoni alla Francese, published by Filippo Lomazzo of Milan in 1606; the collection is in the form of a partitura (score), and like much music printed in this way, is apparently suitable both for keyboard and ensemble. The canzoni are particularly attractive, and have much more varied themes than do most similar pieces of the time.
The original note values have been preserved in this edition. An occasional editorial accidental has been added, printed small above the stave, and applying to a single note.
