Cima, Andrea: 2 Canzoni da sonar

for 4 instruments.

These two canzonas by Andrea Cima (fl. 1606-1627), brother of the more famous Giovanni Paolo Cima, come from two collections published in Milan in the early seventeenth century: La Novella was included in Giovanni Paolo's Partito de Ricercari e Canzoni alla Francese of 1606, while La Gentile is found in the Seconda Aggiunta alli concerti ... et data in luce da Filippo Lomazzo of 1617; both pieces are also found in the Pelplin Tablature, a huge manuscript written in German keyboard tablature that has survived in Poland (facsimile published in the series "Antiquitates Musicae Polonia'). They are particularly attractive in the way their themes have broken away from the conventional chanson-like figures, and they have a great deal of internal contrast that should be matched by a lively and wellarticulated performance.
The original note values have been retained throughout. An occasional editorial accidental has been supplied above the stave, applying to the one note only.
