Cavaccio, Giovanni: 2 canzoni da sonar

for 4 instruments.

These two canzoni da sonar are taken from Ciovanni Cavaccio's Musica... ove si contengono 2 fantasie. .. canzoni alla francese pavana co'l saltarello, Venice, 1597, which, as the title suggests, is a rather varied collection of different kinds of instrumental music; the rather attractive pavana-and-saltarello pair based on the passamezzo antico has already been published in this series (EML 265).
La Bignani makes use of a popular dance tune that probably originated in Germany: it appears in Susato's Danserye of 1551 ("Allemande VII”), Phalèse's 1571 dance book ("Almande Smedilijn"), Mainerio's II Primo Libro de Balli (1578) ("Tedescha" - printed in LPM TM66), and several other sources. It was used by several Italian composers c. 1600 as a theme for instrumental fantasias or canzoni: Gastoldi included an anonymous 2-part piece in his Il Primo Libro della Musica a due voci (1598) (see LPM IM8), and Ottavio Bariola produced a rather witty number based on it in his Capricci over canzoni a quattro, libro terzo of 1594 (to be published in our Italian Instrumental Music series). The other piece, La Morari, also appears to be quite close to the world of dance music, and is far from the conventional imitative canzon da sonar; it seems to require a brisk tempo to do justice to its somewhat manic qualities.
In this edition the original note values have been retained, except for the triple-time section of La Morari, in which they have been halved. Editorial accidentals appear in the usual way, printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only; original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar.
