Caurroy, Eustache du: 2 Fantasies

for 4 instruments.

These two fantasies come from du Caurroy´s FANTASIES A III. IIII. V et VI PARTIES, par Eustache DU Caurroy, Maitre de Musique de la Chapelle de Roy, Paris, 1610. Both are built around liturgical melodies: the first on a version of Iste Confessor (not the usual version), the second on the French version of Psalm 55.
Eustache du Caurroy (1549-1609) was very much a composer of the French court: for many years he was vice-maitre de la chappelle royale and was eventually promoted to surintendent de la musique: his Missa pro defunctis was sung at the funeral of Henry IV: his splendid setting of Prince, la France te veut recently appeared in this series (EML 280). Du Caurroy´s is the only French printed collection of instrumental fantasies of its time to survive; it contains 42 pieces in all, many of which are based on plainsong melodies, though secular tunes do figure, notably the popular chanson Je suis desheritée. Three 3-part pieces from the same collection have already appeared in the present series (EML 168). A complete edition by the undersigned is published in our Musica Practica series (MP8).
Original note values have been retained throughout. The few editorial accidentals appear in the usual way above the stave, applying to the one note only.
