Bateson, Thomas: 2 Madrigals (1604)

for 4 voices or instruments.

Thomas Bateson (c.1570-1630) is known principally for his two books of madrigals, published in 1604 and 1618 respectively. This is surprising, given that he made his living as a church organist, first at Chester cathedral, then at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin.
Bateson seems to have been one of the more serious-minded of the madrigalists, and his music sometimes shows signs of the influence of Wilbye and Weelkes, whose pieces tend to be on the passionate end of the spectrum. The two pieces here are taken from The first set ofEnglish Madrigales to 3. 4. 5. and 6. voices, published by Thomas East in 1604. While modest in scope, both works are quite passionate in nature.
In this edition the original note values have retained throughout. For the sake of simplicity, the original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar: cautionary accidentals in brackets have been supplied where necessary.
