Anerio, Giovanni Francesco: 2 Gagliarde

for 4 instruments.

These two pieces are taken from Gagharde A Quatro Voci Composte da Gio. Francesco Anerio Romano, Intavolate per sonare sul Cimbalo et sul Liuto, Libro Primo, an engraved print without indication of date or place, but which shows all the signs of having been produced in Rome at the beginning of the seventeenth century. The collection consists of 14 galliards, each of which is provided in keyboard score and in lute tablature. However, there is no attempt at all to compose idiomatic keyboard settings: all the pieces are in four parts throughout, and actually work better as ensemble pieces. No, 1 in the collection is based on Crecquillon´s chanson Ung gay bergier, very well-known in Italy, while in the present piece on Palestrina´s Vestiva i colli the model is not indicated.
Giovanni Francesco Anerio (1567-1630) was the younger brother of the somewhat better-known Felice Anerio. He was known primarily for his achievements in the field of oratorio.
In this edition the note values have been halved. Original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar. The occasional editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only.
These attractive pieces can be played on consorts of recorders, or violin family, or cornetts and sackbuts. Tempi should not be too fast, assuming that these gagliarde, like many of their time, are independent instrumental pieces rather than functional dance music.
