Lütkeman: 2 Pavans (1597)

for 6 instruments.

These two pavanes come from Paul Lütkeman´s big collection of vocal and instrumental music, Der Erste Theil / Newer Lateinischer und deutscher Gesenge auff die vornembsten Feste und etliche Sontage im Jahr nebenst nachfolgenden schönen Fantasien, / Paduanen und Galliarden Iustig zusingen unnd gar lieblich auff / allerley art Instrumenten zu gebrauchen, mit 5. 6. und mehr Stimmen..., published in Stettin (now Szczecin in Poland) in 1597.
Unfortunately one part book, the sextus, is missing in the only surviving copy of this collection, so I have had to supply, the missing part. Paduana 28 appears in the original index with the note “2. Diskant 2 Baß”, so I have kept the added part lower than in the other piece.
Lütkeman seems to have spent his working life in Pomerania, well to the east of most German musicians of the time that we know about, and this is reflected to some extent in his music. His pavanes differ from the many pieces of this type that appeared in Germany - especially in the north - at the very end of the century, in that they do not show any obvious signs of English influence; indeed, if there is any influence to be discerned, it is Italian, though even this is not particularly strong. Some of the other pieces in the collection are based on German songs: there is, for instance, a five-part pavane based on Regnart´s Ohn dich muss ich, and his attractive fantasia on Innsbruck, ich muss dich lassen (LPM GM1) is by now fairly well-known.
The original note values have been retained. The original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar; the occasional editorial accidental appears printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only.
