Franck, Melchior: 2 Pavans

for 6 instruments.

These two six-part pavans come from Melchior Franck´s Newer Pavanen Galliarden unnd Intraden, auff allerley Instrumenten zu musicieren, mit vier fünff und sechs Stimmen gesetzt, Coburg, 1603. Unfortunately, as is the case with so many Franck collections, the only complete surviving copy of this print was lost in the 1939-45 war, so I have had to follow Franz Bölsch´s transcription in Denkmäler Deutscher Tonkunst, Erste Folge, XVI: Melchior Franck und Valentin Haussmann, Ausgewählte Instrumentalwerke, 1904, in which the original note values were preserved.
In these pieces Franck has gone a long way from the origins of the pavan, introducing antiphonal groupings and dramatic changes of mood. Similar breakthroughs can be observed in his six-part intradas (published in LPM TM40 and TM54).
Franck probably had stringed instruments in mind as his first choice, but these pieces also work well on wind instruments (cornetts, sackbuts, curtals, recorders).
