Ferretti, Giovanni: 2 Canzoni

(Il secondo libro delle canzoni a sei voci) for 6 voices or instruments.

These two pieces are taken from Giovanni Ferretti´s Il Secondo Libro delle Canzoni a sei voci, published by Girolamo Scotto of Venice in 1575. Ferretti´s collection contains 21 pieces, all of which show the signs of being based on 3-part villanelle alla napolitane, though in many cases the models have not yet been discovered. Fortunately the models, both anonymous, for the two pieces here have emerged, and are printed inside the cover of this publication.
Ferretti´s collection gives only the initial stanza for each piece, but additional stanzas are available from the original 3-part settings. These we have printed below, though it seems unlikely that Ferretti intended them to be used for his arrangements, which are considerably longer than the simple 3-part originals.
The original note values have been retained throughout. Editorial accidentals are shown in the usual way above the stave, applying to the one note only.
