Byrd, William: Pavan and Galliard

for 6 instruments.

William Byrd´s masterly 6-part pavan and galliard is found in one source only, MS Mus. Sch. c. 64-9 of the Bodleian Library at Oxford. In this edition the original note values have been retained. Editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave. At the end of the pavan the top part repeats the final note: it is possible that Byrd intended all the parts to do this. In the galliard the manuscript has the last phrase of the pavan in the second part (bars 21 to end); the missing phrase has been deduced from the context.
These pieces can be performed on consorts of recorders, violins, viols, or cornetts and sackbuts. A possible alternative is to use recorders at 8 - foot pitch (TTB) for the three upper voices, with viols on the remaining ones.
