Thesselius, Johannes: Suite a 5 (1609)

for 5 instruments.

Johann Thesselius, who worked Schloss Aschach near Linz (Austria) is known only for his Newe liebliche Paduanen, Intraden und Galliarden auff allerley Instrumenten zugebrauchen, published in Nürnberg in 1609. The collection consists in effect of ten suites (though the word is not actually used in the source), each consisting of paduana, intrada and galliarda. This scheme actually predates by two years the suites of Paul Peuerl, normally considered by music historians to have been the first to publish instrumental suites. Peuerl was another Austrian, who was almost a neighbour of Thesselius, working in nearby Steyr from around 1609. According to the dedication, these suites were used as Tafelmusik at Schloss Aschach.
In several of the suites there is a degree of thematic connection between the three movements. In our example the interval of the fourth is strongly featured: both the paduana and galliarda, but especially the former, exploit sequences based on this interval.
In this edition the original note values have been retained. For the sake of convenience, the original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar. In bar 27 of the galliard the cantus and quinta vox move in consecutive unisons for three notes, which is unconventional, but preserves the integrity of the motives: players whose sensibilities are offended by this unorthodox behaviour can substitute a d” for the b’ flat in the cantus.
