Posch, Isaac: Paduana & Gagliarda

for 5 instruments.

Isaac Posch was an organist, organ-builder and composer who spent his working life in Austria and Slovenia, where he is known to have built an organ in the capital city of LjubIjana.
This paduana and gagliarda come from his Musicalische Tafelfreudt, das ist allerley neuer Paduanen und Gagliarden a 5, desgleichen Intraden und Couranten, published in Nürnberg in 1621.
Although the paduana begins slowly in the traditional manner, it quite quickly introduces faster-moving material, and by the third section the harmony is simplified to allow quite elaborate figuration, which is not confined to the two upper parts. The paduana and gagliarda are related through sharing an initial motif.
In this edition the original note values have been preserved in both pieces. Editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only. For the sake of simplicity the original accidentals, printed on the stave, are taken as applying to the whole bar. The tempo of the pavan is limited by the amount of elaboration in the third section, but it should not be too slow.
