Phillips, Peter: Pavan and Galliard "Pagget"

for 5 instruments.

These pieces by Peter Phillips are taken from MS Egerton 3665 of the British Library, a collection compiled by Phillips´ friend Francis Tregian, probably during his period in prison from 1609~1619. Peter Phillips (1560-1628) had to leave England in 1582, because he would not renounce his Catholic faith; he went to Rome for a few years, where he was in the service of another Catholic refugee, Lord Thomas Paget. Paget died in 1590, and it is distinctly possible that the present pavan and galliard were composed in memory of a patron that helped Phillips at a vulnerable time in his life. An elaborate keyboard version can be found in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, which was also compiled by Tregian.
The Aria del Gran Duca Ferdinando di Toscana, as Egerton has it, goes back to Cavalieri's Ballo "O che nuovo miraculo" from the 6th of the famous intermedii of 1589. Cavalieri's piece, with its strong bass line, became very popular as a basis for variations and other kinds of elaboration over the following fifty years or so. There are among other things, 8-part sinfonias by Viadana and Canali, sonatas for two violins and continuo by Banchieri and Buonamente, and many keyboard versions, including one by Sweelinck. See Warren Kirkendale, L'Aria di Fiorenza, id est il Ballo del Gran Duca, Florence, 1972.
In the present edition the original note values have been preserved in the pavan and galliard, but halved in the Aria. Purely editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to the one nde only. In the pavan and galliard accidentals taken from the keyboard version appear on the stave in brackets; these, together with the accidentals in Egerton, are taken as applying to the whole bar. The original key-signature in the pavan and galliard is one flat; certain Es not marked flat in the manuscript, and which seem from the context to be E naturals, are so marked with small accidentals.
