Nu(n) komm der Heiden Heiland

(4 settings, 1544-1627) for 5 voices or instruments.

Nu(n) komm der Heiden Heiland is one of the central chorales for Advent in the Lutheran repertoire, and a great number of settings have survived. We have recently included a 4-part setting by Balthasar Resinarius in this series (EML 372): the classic 5-part version by Johann Walther can be found in LPM 516, and a rather fine one by Praetorius in LPM 517. Samuel Scheidt´s remarkably fine double-choir version has already appeared in the present series (EML 304).
The four settings printed here span several generations, which has practical implications: we cannot assume that all four will work at the same tempo: the Schein version in particular has a much faster harmonic rhythm than the others, so needs to be taken more steadily.
The first setting is taken from Georg Rhau´s Neue deutsche geistliche Gesdnge für die gemeinen Schulen (Wittenberg, 1544). Eccard´s setting is from his Geistliche Lieder auff den Choral of 1597, that by Raselius from his Regenspurgischer Kirchen Contrapunct Allerley üblichen und in Christlichen Versammlungen gebräuchigen Geistlichen Psalmen und Lieder (Regensburg, 1599). Schein´s version is taken from his Cantional oder Gesangbuch Augsburgischer Konfession, 1627/1645. It contains a basso continuo part, which has not been included in our edition for reason of space, given that it is identical with the bassus part itself.
In this edition the original note values have been halved in settings 1-3, but retained in the Schein.
