Mundy, William: Fantasia a 5

for 5 instruments (SSATB).

This fantasy by William Mundy (c. 1529-1591) comes from British Libray, Add. MS 37402-6, a collection of different kinds of music, including madrigals and motets, written in most cases without text. The present piece has no title, and we have to accept the possibility that it may have been a motet originally; it does, however, make quite an impressive instrumental piece. The composer´s name is given just as “Munday”, though one partbook has what appears to be a faint “W” before the name. The partnames given in the transcription are edtiorial, as the original scribe seems to have assigned the parts rather arbitrarily to the different partbooks: the part we have called “Tenor” appears in the “Second Treble” partbook.
In this edition the original note values have been halved. The occasional editorial accidental appears printed small above the stave. There is one dubious passage in the Cantus: in bar 35 the last three notes are a third lower, leading to a minim g' followed by rests until bar 39.
