Morley, Thomas: 2 Pavans

(The Sacred End Pavan, Southern´Pavan) for 5 instruments.

These two pavans come from MS 4° of the Landesbibliothek in Kassel, an important source of English music, where they appear as nos. 34 and 4 respectively. The pieces appear without titles, which are taken from the (incomplete) broken consort versions of the same pieces in Philip Rosseter´s Lessons for Consort of 1609.
The Sacred End Pavan is unusual in two respects: the inclusion of a section in triple time, and the imitative final section, which supposedly derives from Tye´s “I lift my heart to thee”.
Southerne´s Pavan may be named after the John Southerne (Soowthem) who pub lished a book of doggerel called Pandora: the Musyque of the Beautie of his Mistresse Diana in 1584. There are two keyboard settings: one by Morley himself (published in Thurston Dart´s complete edition of this composer´s keyboard music) and one by Giles Farnaby (see Musica Britannica XXIV). The last section, with its slow-moving cantus, and entries in the remaining parts after crotchet rests is one of a type fashionable among English composers (and one that seems to have gone down well in Germany, to judge by the imitations, including one by Schein in his Banchetto Musicale.
The original note values have been preserved throughout. Editorial accidentals appear printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only. The original accidentals are taking as applying to the whole bar, until contradicted.
