Lupo, Thomas: The 5-part Consort Music, Vol. 1

edited by Richard Charteris.

This is a major body of the English consort repertory which has long awaited publication in a complete edition. lt comprises 35 pieces and has been divided into two volumes, the first of which is now available together with partbooks. It is hoped to publish the second volume within a few months. The music contains fine examples of Lupo's bold harmonic style and includes a number of pieces with Italian titles that seem to have been composed originally as madrigals. Their dramatic rhetorical gestures and mercurial changes of mood afford valuable insights into the evolution of English fantasy style of this period.
