Haussmann, Valentin: Paduan & Galliard

"Go from my window" and other pieces for 5 instruments.

Haussmann's paduan and galliard on the popular English tune "Go from my window" come from his Neue fünffstimmige Paduane und Galliarde auff Instrumenten fürnemlich auff Fiolen lieblich zugebrauchen, published in Nürnberg in 1604. Another paduan-galliard pair on an English melody (“Roland”, or "Lord Willoughby´s Welcome Home") has already been included in the present series (EML 130). The other two pieces are from his Rest von Polnischen und andern Täntzen, of 1603. The original note values have been preserved throughout. Editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only. As is the case with many other German collections, the title-page indicates a preference for stringed instruments, presumably because the viol was the favourite instrument of the wealthy amateurs who would have bought such music. However, the pieces work perfectly well on wind instruments such as recorders, or on cornetts, sackbuts and curtals.
