This pavan and galliard pair comes from the second of the two Füllsack and Hildebrand anthologies of 1607 and 1609, the Ander Theil/ Außerlesener lieblicher Paduanen und auch so viel/ Galliarden mit fünff Stimmen auff allerley Instrumenten und insonderheit auff Fiolen zu gebrauchen, published in Hamburg by Philipp von Ohr and Michel Hering.
Little is known of Nicolas Gistou, other than he was from Brussels, and was recruited for the Danish royal chapel in 1598. He was hired as an “altist” (high tenor) and paid a salary equal to that of the court instrumentalists; he stayed in Denmark until his death in 1609. The Füllsack and Hildebrand anthology contains one other pavan and galliard pair. Both sets show the hand of a competent composer.
