Borchgrevinck, Melchior: 2 Pavans (1607/1609)

for 5 instruments.

These two pavans are taken from the two anthologies of 5-part instrumental music compiled by Zacharias FülIsack and Christian Hildebrand and published by Philip Ohr in 1607 and 1609; both collections are important sources for instrumental music by German, English, Dutch and Danish composers.
Melchior Borchgrevinck was the son of a Dutch musician, Bonaventura Borchgrevinck, who was appointed director of the Royal Chapel in Denmark in 1587. Although his father left Denmark a year or so later Melchior stayed there, and eventually became director of the Royal Chapel himself, though not until 1618.
The original note values have been retained. Apart from the very occasional editorial accidental (printed small above the stave, and applying to the one note only), the music follows the original prints exactly.
