Volume 2 comprises Sonnata's 7-12. Viol players will find this music to be familiar in that it uses the idiom of the composer's earlier fantasias for viols, with their sudden surges to the harmonic depths and heights; but combined with their harmony and counterpoint is the purposeful, organized Italian trio-sonata structure: the resulting blend provides one of the greatest musical experiences of the early Baroque period.
