Ockeghem, Johannes: Rondeaux & Ballades

for 3 voices or instruments.

The secular works of Johannes Ockeghem (c.1410-1497) have been somewhat neglected in our time, partly because until recently there was no complete edition. This is a pity, because the relatively small corpus of surviving pieces (about a quarter of the total by Ockeghem´s contemporary Antoine Busnois) is of remarkable quality. The present selection includes two pieces that were very widely-known in the late 15th century: the virelai Ma bouche rit and the rondeau D´un aultre amer (one of the most widely-arranged pieces of its time, after De tous biens playne and l´ay pris amours).
Ockeghem´s songs, though small in number, are quite varied in their approach. Two of the pieces here have a good deal of imitation between discantus and tenor, as is often found, for example, in the late songs of Dufay, or many by Busnois. Ma maistresse, on the other hand, is written in an older, more treble-dominated style, in which the tenor does not much imitate the discantus: it is remarkable for its long soaring phrases.
L´autre d´antan, D´un aultre amer, Les desléaulx and Quant de vous seul are printed after the Dijon Chansonnier, while Ma bouche rit is after the Chansonnier Nivelle de la Chaussée and Ma maistresse after the Wolfenbüttel Chansonnier (Herzog-August-Bibliothek, MS 287).
In this edition the original note values have been halved throughout; editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only.
