Morton, Robert: 5 Songs

for 3 voices or instruments.

Remarkably little is known about Robert Morton (c. 1430-1476), except that he was a chappellain in the chapel choir of the Burgundian court from about 1457 to his death. But his reputation during his lifetime is reflected in the fact that several of his chansons, survive in a large number of sources. We have already included one of his most popular songs, Le souvenir, in our anthology Ten Songs of the fifteenth century (LPM EK4a).
Morton´s songs are distinguished by very well-balanced melodies, sometimes in all three parts. An unusual feature is a penchant for a tenor part that has a similar range to the top part, rather than sharing the tessitura of the contratenor: Mon bien m´amour is a good example of this.
In this edition the original note values have been halved throughout. Editorial accidentals are shown in the usual way, that is printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only. For the sake of convenience, the original note values are taken as applying to the whole bar.
