Morley, Thomas: 5 Canzonets a 3 (1593)

for 3 voices or instruments.

These five pieces come from Thomas Morley´s Canzonets or Little Short Songs to three voyces, originally published in London in 1593, though no. 5, Love learns by laughing, was not included in the first edition. In fact all five pieces here are printed after the reprint of 1606, which is preferable in a number of minor respects.
Morley´s pieces obviously take the canzonette of such north Italian musicians as Orazio Vecchi as their starting-point: the resemblance is particularly striking in Thirsis, let pity move thee, with its characteristic dotted rhythms. But there is perhaps more variety of mood and treatment in some of Morley´s pieces than would find in a typical canzonetta.
See, mine own sweet jewel was included in Morley´s Consort Lessons of 1599 in a version for broken consort (violin, flute, viol, cittern, bandora and lute), called “Joyne hands”. This demonstrates, as if that were really necessary, how well such music transfers to instruments.
In this edition the original note values have been retained; however in no. 3 the short triple section (bar 15) is written in black notes in the original (the first note is a black semibreve). The original time-signatures have been retained; bars have been added every two or three beats, to reflect the rhythm of the words, though I have not gone as far in this as did E. H. Fellowes in his complete edition (The English Madrigal). Editorial accidentals are shown in the usual way, printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only; for the sake of simplicity, the original accidentals, printed on the stave, are taken as applying to the whole bar.
