Mayone, Ascanio: 2 Ricercari

for 3 instruments.

These two ricercari come from the Primo libro di ricercari a tre voci / Di Ascanio Maione Napolitano, Organista, published in Naples in 1606.
Ascanio Mayone (c. 1565-1627) seems to have spent his whole working life in Naples. He is known today principally for some rather innovative keyboard music; together with his fellow Neapolitan Giovanni Maria Trabaci (who has already been featured in our series - see EML 368) he developed a kind of free, harmonically expressive music that today we associate more with the rather younger Girolamo Frescobaldi. However, his ensemble pieces, including those printed here, are rather more traditional, though his use of intervals is often rather distinctive. We have recently published three other ricercari from the 1606 book, based on the old La Spagna melody (see LPM IM14).
In this edition the original note values have been retained throughout. Editorial accidentals are shown in the usual way, that is printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only. For the sake of convenience, the original note values are taken as applying to the whole bar.
