Dufay, Guillaume: 4 Italian Songs

for 3 voices or instruments.

These four songs of Guillaume Dufay (c.1398-1474) were probably written during the composer´s period in Italy (1427-33). If it were not for the Italian connection, it would still be reasonable to assume that they were fairly early works on grounds of style.
In this edition the original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar, for the sake of convenience. Purely editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only. I am grateful to Peggy Forsyth for translating the texts of these songs.
These pieces may be sung or played on instruments (recorders, viols, etc.). As usual in much secular music of this time, the contratenor is complementary to the other two, which provide the basic structural material of the music. So in choosing instruments for the two lower parts, the stronger should go on the tenor, if they are not perfectly matched. As a way into performing this music, there is a lot to be said for trying the pieces first without the contrarenor, and adding this part at a later stage.
