Bassano, Giovanni: The Three-Part Consort Music

edited by Richard Charteris.

Giovanni Bassano (c. 1558-1617) was a famous comett player, joining the instrumental ensernble at the Basilica of St. Mark, Venice in 1576 and becoming the leader of the ensernble in 1601, a position he occupied until his death in 1617. Bassano is probably best known today as the author of two important tutors on the art of embellishment, one published in 1585 and the other in 1591. He was also an outstanding composer, though his reputation in this regard has been overshadowed by that of his more farnous colleagues at St. Mark's, among them Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli and Giovanni Croce. Among his instrumental works are twenty three-part fantasias, and it is these pieces that are included in the present edition.
These delightful works first appeared in print in: FANTASIE/ A TRE VOCI,/ PER CANTAR E SONAR/ con ogni sorte d'Istrumenti:/ DI GIOVANNI BASSANO/ Musico dell Illustrissima Signoria di Venetia,/ nuovamente composti & date in luce./ [coat of arms]/ IN VENETIA/ Presso Giacomo Vincenzi, & Ricciardo Amadino, compagni./ MDLXXXV. This early print consists of three part-books, labelled respectively 'Canto', 'Tenore' and 'Basso'. Only one complete copy of this print survives, and this is preserved in Krakow, Biblioteca Jagiellonska (this copy was formerly in Berlin); except for a copy of the Basso part-book in London, British Library, there are no other copies of this print extant. The Krakow copy is the principal source in this edition. The original print is dedicated to the famous Veronese patron, Count Mario Bevilacqua, whose house was the location of a valuable music library and regular concerts; and where Bassano's fantasias are likely to have had their first performance.
