Ave Maris Stella

(5 settings from the Trent Codices) for 3 voices or instruments.

These five settings of the hymn Ave maris stella are scattered around the large tomes of the Trent Codices, which were mostly written between 1445 and 1465, and which are preserved in the Museo Nazionale in Trento, Italy. The melody in each case is in the top part, but often disguised by different kinds of elaborations. Not all the settings have the text underlaid in the original: also, while most have verse 2 of the hymn (Sumens illud) as one would expect (the odd-numbered verses being normally sung to the plainsong - see below), some have verse 1.
We have really compiled this selection for the benefit of instrumentalists. If they are used in a quasi-liturgical context, extra verses will have to be underlaid. By choosing three of these settings for verses 2, 4 and 6 of the hymn, and alternating with the plainsong, it is possible to sing the hymn in its entirely.
