Arcadelt, Jacques: 4 Chansons

for 3 voices or instruments.

These four three-part chansons by Jacques Arcadelt (c. 1505-1568) are remarkable for their simplicity: although recognisably French in their phrase structure, they seem to have some of the characteristics of the Italian villanella napolitana. The first three, printed after Le Roy & Ballard´s Tiers Livre de Chansons of 1553, are also unusual in having several verses. No. 4, printed after the same publishers´ Chansons a troys parties de M. Jacques Arcadelt of 1573, has something of the Spanish villancico. Unlike most published three-part French chansons of this time, these are not arrangements of pre-existent chansons, but songs deliberately written in the simple, closely-spaced texture of popular Italian music.
An unusual feature of no. 1 is the use of pauses at the end of certain lines: the first pause, in bar 11, does actually appear between the two notes in the source: the second will sometimes have to occur on the penultimate syllable if some of the additional verses are sung, because of feminine endings.
In this edition the original note values have been halved, except in no. 4. Editorial accidentals are shown in the usual way, printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only; for the sake of simplicity, the original accidentals, printed on the stave, are taken as applying to the whole bar.
