Agricola, Alexander: 5 Chansons

for 3 voices or instruments.

These chansons demonstrate the many sides of Alexander Agricola (c. 1446-1506); the first two are chansons rustiques, or settings of popular songs; Se vous voulez m´estre loyalle et bonne is a courtly song (bergerette/virelai) in a style not far removed from that of Ghizeghem or Busnois; against this Adieu m´amour looks forward to the sixteenth-century chanson, while preserving a little of the earlier elaboration. Si congé prens is an ornate setting of a melody that has survived in other settings, shared between cantus and tenor.
In this edition, the original note values have been halved except in no. 2, where they have been quartered. Editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, and apply to the one note only.
These pieces can be sung, or played on instruments (recorders, viols, etc.); no. 1 can be done with the tenor part sung and the remaining parts on instruments: in nos 2-4 the top part is probably the best to pick out, while no. 5 needs the cantus and tenor to be balanced. The considerable variety of these pieces should be reflected in performance, especially in choice of tempi, so that, for instance, the most modem piece, Adieu m´amours will require a slower beat than nos. 1 or 4; in Si congé prens the tempo needs to be fast enough for the counterpoints to sound like ornamentation, and for the basic melody to come through.
