6 Rondeaux from the Wolfenbüttel Chansonnier

for 3 voices or instruments.

These anonymous rondeaux come from the Wolfenbüttel Chansonnier (MS287extravagant of the Herzog-August-Bibliothek, Wolfenbüttel, Germany), a collection compiled around 1460-65, according to the editor of the complete edition (in the series Musikalsche Denkmäler). Most of the pieces in this little selection are slightly different from the run-of-the-mill works of their time. Two of the pieces, Se mieulx ne vient and Et fusse je duc de Bourbon are unusual for their unpretentious simplicity. O infame deloyaulté is remarkable because it is clearly based on Dunstable´s O rosa bella (a fact that seems to have escaped the notice of the editor of the Musikalische Denkmäler edition). If it were only a question of a similar opening it would be possible to dismiss the resemblance as coincidental, but there are several other points in common; it is possible that the present text was added at a later stage, as the phrase in bar 6 with the repeated crotchets does not fit the text especially well. Belle de parler has something in common with that of Busnois´ Bel Acueil (see EML 174): the opening theme is somewhat similar, and it is treated in imitation as is Busnois´.
In this edition the ori inal note values have been halved, except for no. 6, in which they have been quartered. Original accidentals are shown in the usual way, printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only. I am grateful to Jeannine Alton for translating the texts of these songs.
