3 Instrumental pieces from the Henry VIII MS

for 3 instruments.

These three untitled instrumental pieces from the famous Henry VIII MS (British Library, Add. MS 31922) show the influence of the many Franco-Flemish musicians who worked at the English court. Perhaps the most obviously “Netherlandish” piece is the first one, which could have been written by a disciple of Heinrich Isaac; however, the ending is unconventional, and is perhaps the result of indigenous influences.
The note values have been halved throughout. The first piece is unusual in having no clefs in the original, though these are of course implied by the key-signature. Rather than print the piece in E flat, which is what the flats would suggest, I have put down to B flat, in the hope that this will be a better key for most instruments, especially recorders. Editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to one note only.
