11 Pieces from the Glogauer Liederbuch

The Glogauer Liederbuch is a substantial set of partbooks, written between 1479 and 1488, including music by German-speaking musicians as well as some French and Netherlandish pieces. Glogau (Glogow) is a town in Silesia (now part of Poland), not very far away from Wroclaw (Breslau). The collection has been published in facsimile in the series “Renaissance Music in Facsimile” (Garland).
The pieces printed here would seem to be German, though as the scribe added German titles to many French or Netherlandish pieces, one can never be quite sure. The fact that no text is present in the majority of cases does not mean necessarily that the works are instrumental in origin: all these pieces seem to be songs, in most cases with the main melody in the tenor. Two of the pieces are unusual: AI vol is a dialogue, if that is the word, between a drunken husband and a nagging wife, with the texted part changing from tenor to discantus; In Feuers Hitz / O rosa bella is a quodlibet in which the discantus of John Dunstable´s famous Italian song is accompanied by two parts quoting the initial phrase of a number of current songs.
In this edition the original note values have been halved, except in Ich sachs eins mals II, in which they have been quartered. Editorial accidentals are shown in the usual way, that is printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only. The additional verses of Ach Elslein are printed after Boehme, Altdeutsches Liederbuch.
Some of the pieces printed here are settings of melodies that have survived in other versions. Ach Elslein survives in an unusually simple four-part arrangement by Senfl, who also used it in two other settings. Zenner Greiner (usually known as “Greiner Zanker”) survives in a 4-part version by Heinrich Isaac (LPM AN11) and a 5-part one by Heinrich Finck (LPM 202). An anonymous 4-part setting of Ich sachs eins mals from a Munich manuscript has already been included in the present series (EML 259).
